US Ambassador Sergio Gor’s Statement on Kashmir Sparks Controversy in Pakistan

A recent statement by the newly appointed US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, has triggered a major political storm in neighboring Pakistan. Pakistan has strongly objected to Ambassador Gor’s remarks characterizing Jammu and Kashmir as a vital and integral part of India, expressing deep displeasure over the position taken.

Pakistan Summons US Diplomat

Riled by the US ambassador’s remarks, the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs took swift action by summoning the US Chargé d’Affaires in Pakistan, Natalie Baker. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry formally lodged a strong protest against Sergio Gor’s statement, urging Washington to ensure that public remarks made by its representatives remain aligned with its long-standing policies regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Reference to United Nations Resolutions

Expressing its frustration, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry issued a statement claiming that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognized disputed territory. Pakistan argued that the final resolution of this issue must be achieved in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. Islamabad claimed that the US ambassador’s statement runs counter to Washington’s historically maintained stance on the matter.

Review of Security Situation and Travel Advisories

On the other hand, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor lauded the steps taken by the central government and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to establish lasting peace and security in the region. He hinted that the US administration could soon review its travel advisory levels for Jammu and Kashmir and consider relaxing existing restrictions.

New Opportunities for Tourism and US Nationals

Highlighting the breathtaking natural beauty of Jammu and Kashmir, Sergio Gor stated that it is one of the most scenic regions globally and offers fresh avenues for development. He expressed optimism that following further improvements in the security climate, a growing number of American tourists would choose to visit India to witness the beauty and rich culture of Jammu and Kashmir firsthand.

Pakistan Reiterates Its Traditional Stand

Dismissing the assertion that Jammu and Kashmir is a part of India, Pakistan reiterated its stance labelling the region as internationally disputed. Islamabad asserted that the remarks are factually incorrect and contradict historical US positions. Furthermore, Pakistan termed the statement a violation of the UN Charter and international law. Meanwhile, India has consistently maintained that the entirety of Jammu and Kashmir, along with Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), is an integral part of the nation. Following the summoning of the US diplomat, Pakistan released an extensive statement echoing its routine rhetoric on the Kashmir issue.
