A major accident took place in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar on Wednesday night when a large portion of a slab collapsed at the under-construction Bosky The Empire building near the Kudasan area. Around 15 workers were reportedly trapped under the debris after the structure gave way.
Rescue teams pulled all the trapped workers out, while 12 injured workers were taken to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital for treatment. Three others, who did not suffer serious injuries, were discharged, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said after reaching the spot.
Soon after the incident was reported, four fire brigade vehicles from Gandhinagar were rushed to the construction site. Police and fire personnel began removing the debris and searching the collapsed portion of the structure to ensure that no one remained trapped.
Preliminary information suggests that a crane may have fallen during construction work, following which a large section of the building’s slab collapsed. However, authorities have not yet established the exact cause of the accident.
At the time of the incident, welding work was reportedly underway at the construction site. The sudden collapse brought down the slab and trapped workers underneath it. Rescue personnel worked cautiously through the debris as heavy construction material and structural components had to be removed to reach those trapped.
Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi visited the accident site after receiving information about the incident. He took stock of the rescue operation and reviewed the condition of the injured workers. Officials were instructed to ensure that the rescue operation was carried out without further risk to workers and emergency personnel.
Police teams were also deployed around the site. As news of the accident spread, a large number of people gathered near the construction project. Police personnel moved the crowd away from the affected area to keep the site clear for fire brigade and rescue teams.
The accident has also raised questions about safety arrangements at the construction site. Investigators are expected to examine several aspects, including the condition and operation of the crane, structural safety, construction practices and whether prescribed safety measures were being followed.
For now, the immediate focus remains on the injured workers and a detailed assessment of the site. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the slab collapse.
