Monsoon downpours and devastating floods have triggered severe destruction across several states in India, crippling daily life from South India to the Northeast. Kerala, Assam, and Odisha are bearing the worst brunt of the crisis. Continuous torrential rains have caused rivers to swell, leaving thousands homeless, while administrative machinery works round the clock on rescue and relief operations.

Kerala Flood Crisis: 25 Dead and Over 18,000 Sheltered in Relief Camps

Incessant heavy rains starting August 1 have unleashed widespread devastation across multiple districts of Kerala. According to state government data, rain-related incidents have claimed 25 lives so far, with four people missing and 10 injured. Furthermore, 52 houses have been completely reduced to rubble, while 565 homes have sustained partial damage. More than 18,000 people have taken shelter in over 400 relief camps set up across the state. Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Alappuzha remain the worst-affected districts, where low-lying areas continue to battle severe waterlogging.

181 Percent Excess Rainfall and IMD Red Alert Issued

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kerala recorded 205.8 mm of rainfall between August 1 and August 4, against a normal average of 73.2 mm—marking a staggering 181 percent excess rainfall. In view of the deteriorating weather, the weather department has issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. Additionally, rising water levels in the Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha rivers have prompted authorities to advise residents to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel.

Vital Documents and Books Washed Away, Government Assures Special Assistance

The floods have washed away essential documents, children’s school textbooks, and household belongings of thousands of families. The state government has announced that special camps or courts will be set up to reissue lost documents for affected citizens, and free textbooks will be provided to students. The Chief Minister has assured immediate financial aid to those who have lost their homes and livelihoods, alongside sanctioning Rs 25,000 for sanitation work in each affected ward.

Assam Flood Toll Rises to 87, Affecting 1.28 Lakh People

The northeastern state of Assam continues to grapple with a grim flood situation. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two more deaths reported from Sivasagar district over the past 24 hours have pushed the total death toll from this year’s floods to 87. Six districts across the state remain submerged, impacting roughly 1.28 lakh people. Sivasagar alone accounts for over 55,000 affected residents, while conditions remain challenging in Charaideo and Jorhat.

Odisha Announces Rs 110 Crore Relief Package and Weather Alerts for Other States

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an initial relief package of Rs 110 crore for flood victims. The state has reported 6 deaths and 3,567 damaged houses so far, with financial assistance of up to Rs 1.2 lakh allocated for fully destroyed homes. Meanwhile, the IMD has issued red and orange alerts for heavy rainfall across 15 districts in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, heightening risks for bordering districts in Assam.
